What is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a simple way schools and universities measure a student’s overall academic performance. CGPA is calculated by taking the average of all grade points earned in every subject. Extra subjects are usually not included in this calculation.

Most institutions use either a 10-point or 4-point grading system. A score of 10 (or 4) is the highest grade. However, the conversion to percentage may vary between universities. Some use CGPA × 9.5, while others follow their own formula.

CGPA = Σ (Course Grade × Course Credits) / Σ (Course Credits)

This formula works by multiplying each course grade with its credit value. Then, you divide the total by the sum of all credits. This gives you your overall CGPA.

10 10-Point System

Used in most Indian universities. Scores range from 0 to 10.

4 4-Point System

Common in US universities. Scores range from 0 to 4.

Frequently Asked Questions

CGPA is found by multiplying each course’s grade points with its credit value, adding them up, and dividing by the total credits. For example, if Course A has Grade 9 with 4 credits, and Course B has Grade 8 with 3 credits: (9×4 + 8×3) / (4+3) = 60/7 = 8.57 CGPA.
