What is SGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is a method used by schools, colleges, and universities to measure a student’s performance in a semester. It is calculated by taking the average of grade points earned in all subjects during that term.

The SGPA scale usually ranges from 0 to 10, where 10 is the highest score. This score gives you a clear idea of your academic progress for that semester. Later, your SGPAs from different semesters are combined to calculate your CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average).

SGPA Grade Scale Reference

SGPA Range Grade Percentage Equivalent Performance
9.5 – 10.0 O (Outstanding) 90% – 100% Exceptional
8.5 – 9.4 A+ (Excellent) 80% – 89% Excellent
7.5 – 8.4 A (Very Good) 70% – 79% Very Good
6.5 – 7.4 B+ (Good) 60% – 69% Good
5.5 – 6.4 B (Average) 50% – 59% Satisfactory
4.5 – 5.4 C (Pass) 40% – 49% Pass
Below 4.5 F (Fail) Below 40% Fail

SGPA Calculation Formula

SGPA = Σ (Course Grade × Course Credits) / Σ (Course Credits)

The formula works by multiplying each course grade with its respective credit value. Then, the total is divided by the overall credits of that semester to get the SGPA.

10 10-Point System

This system is common in many Indian universities with grades ranging from 0 to 10.

4 4-Point System

Mostly used in US universities where grades usually range from 0 to 4.

Example Calculation

Suppose you have three courses with credits 4, 3, and 2, and grades 9, 8, and 10.
SGPA = (9×4 + 8×3 + 10×2) / (4+3+2) = (36 + 24 + 20) / 9 = 80/9 = 8.89

Frequently Asked Questions

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) shows your performance for one semester. On the other hand, CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) reflects your overall academic performance across all semesters. CGPA is calculated by averaging your SGPAs, taking into account the credit weight of each semester.
To raise your SGPA, concentrate on subjects with higher credit values because they have a bigger effect on the final result. You can also use our SGPA Calculator’s target feature to see the grades needed to reach your goal. Staying consistent in all courses helps improve your overall performance.
Different universities follow different rules to convert SGPA into percentages. Some multiply by 9.5, others use 10, while some have unique formulas. For official use, always follow the method given by your university. Our SGPA Calculator uses the standard 9.5 multiplier by default, but you can adjust it if needed.
The target SGPA feature shows what grades are required to achieve your desired score. It considers your course credits and current marks. This helps you plan better and set practical academic goals.
Yes, it is completely safe. Our SGPA Calculator runs fully in your browser. This means your academic data never gets uploaded or shared, keeping your information private and secure.
